This activity fits in well with QCA 4B Habitats, QCA 5B Life Cycles and QCA 6A Interdependence and Adaptation.

Children are encouraged to predict what they might find in one of our ponds, and to think about what equipment would be best to use and why. Working in teams they carefully and sensitively collect invertebrates for close observation, using keys and ID sheets to identify their catch! The importance of TLC for the creatures is emphasised along with the need to return the creatures back to the pond gently.

Follow up work can cover food chains, life cycles, adaptation to life underwater, or simply looking and enjoying!

This can be a half or full day activity, but works particularly well with a half day looking at land minibeasts or playing the Habitat Game.

Please note that pond dipping is only available in the warmer Spring and Summer months.
