This activity fits in well with QCA 4B Habitats, QCA 5B Life Cycles and QCA 6A Interdependence and Adaptation.

Choose from either a woodland study (looking for minibeasts in leaves from the woodland floor) or a heathland study (looking for minibeasts under logs and stones, and in bushes).

Children are encouraged to predict what they might find in one of our habitats, and to think about what equipment would be best to use and why. Working in teams they carefully and sensitively collect invertebrates for close observation, using keys and ID sheets to identify their catch! The importance of TLC for the creatures is emphasised along with the need to return the creatures back to their home gently.

Follow up work can cover food chains, life cycles, adaptation to their habitat or simply looking and enjoying!

This can be a half or full day activity, but works particularly well with a half day pond dipping or playing the Habitat Game.

Please note that leaf litter is best in the colder Autumn and Winter months, whist the heathland is better when it is warmer!
