We have made the census material for the Victorian period accessible to children, and have created a detailed study of one family who lived in a small cottage during the Victorian period. Using first hand resources the children find who lived in the farm cottage from 1841 to 1891, they discover evidence of types of employment, children growing up and leaving home at an early age and the opening of the village school in 1882. Words such as scholar and cow keeper all add to the interest of finding information from these old documents. Once the pieces of the jigsaw have been fitted together through dressing up for the familly photo album and after a well earned lunch, we go to the churchyard to find the evidence shown on the gravestones.

This activity can be booked for any time of the year but as it is one of the few activities when a lot of time is spent in the classroom it lends itself well to a winter's day.

Children in Years 5 & 6 will benefit most from this study.
