William Bradford, the famous, first elected governor, of New Plymouth, USA, was born in Austerfield and baptised in St. Helena's church in the village.

We will show your children the Manor House where he was born and lived
during some of his childhood and the village green where he must have
played. We follow in his footsteps to church, passing the newly built
‘Butten Meadow’, named after another member of the Pilgrim Fathers.
Once in the churchyard there is a commemorative plaque recognising
William’s baptism in 1589, and inside the church a superb, stained glass
window telling the tale of the Pilgrims in picture for all to read.
